TITLE:
Mandating all registered adult drivers be considered organ donors
MAJOR AREAS TO BE AFFECTED:
Department of Transportation, Department of Health
JUSTIFICATION:
Currently, in the United States, there are approximately 200,000 people in need of an organ transplant. These organs can be as simple as a kidney or as complicated as a heart. As of right now only 12.5 percent of this need is being met. Some of these people only need a living donation but others need organs from the deceased. In 2009 there were roughly 210 million registered licensed drivers in the United States out of this number only 36% are registered organ donors. Every day 17 people die waiting for an organ transplant.
PROPOSAL FOR ACTION :
Under this new system all registered drivers would be considered organ donors unless they have an approved religious conflict. This would be affective in all states.
RESULTS TO BE EXPECTED :
This would increase the number of organ donors to nearly all registered drivers, thus maximizing the number of lives saved.
