TITLE:
To make roads safer by clearly identifying young drivers
MAJOR AREAS TO BE AFFECTED:
Transportation Safety
JUSTIFICATION:
Many teenagers are not safe drivers. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15-20 year olds. In 2008, 63% of teenagers who died as passengers in a car were being driven by another teenager. Sixteen is the age at which it is legal to get a restricted license in many states, and 16 year-olds have a higher crash rate than drivers of any other age. Clearly identifying young drivers will not only encourage the teens to be more careful, but will also alert other drivers to their surroundings. A person who knows he is driving behind a teenager is more likely to be cautious and less likely to get irritated with the teen’s driving skills.
PROPOSAL FOR ACTION :
It should be required to have a sticker on the back license plate of a car that is driven by any person who does not hold an unrestricted license, or is under the age of 18. The sticker should be standard, with the same size, shape, and color throughout the country, so that it is easily recognizable by everyone.
RESULTS TO BE EXPECTED :
This should decrease the number of crashes and deaths involving teens, because they will be more careful, and other drivers around them will be more careful.
